suffering from jaw pain?
If you suffer from jaw pain, you are not alone. Millions of Americans experience jaw pain at one time or another throughout their lives. For some, however, it can disrupt life, making chewing, yawning, and speaking painful. It can even cause chronic headaches.
At Northview Dental of Indianapolis, we can help! Dr. Benson and Dr. Pasicznyk can diagnose and treat your jaw pain using innovative technology that allows us to view your jaw in 3-D via cone beam x-rays. These 3-D images allow him to determine the motion of your jaws and to look at your joints in detail. By using these high-resolution images to diagnose the source of your discomfort, he can make accurate and reliable recommendations for treatment.
Also known as TMJ or TMJD, temporomandibular joint dysfunction refers to symptoms related to the jaw and can include:
- Clicking joints
- Popping joints
- Jaw pain
- Locked jaw joints
- Neck aches
- Shoulder pain
- Facial soreness
- Teeth not coming together correctly
- Tooth sensitivity
- Muscle fatigue
The symptoms of TMJD occur because of trauma, a misaligned bite, damage to your teeth, wear, and sometimes from an unknown cause. Symptoms may come and go or could remain constant. If you clench and grind your teeth while you sleep, the symptoms may be more severe in the morning and you might awaken with a headache.
Treating TMJD as soon as possible is essential. Letting your symptoms linger for too long may result in permanent joint damage, which could require surgery to correct.
Once we diagnose your condition, Dr. Benson and Dr. Pasicznyk will recommend the necessary treatment to restore your comfort and health. In many cases, treatment will start with an occlusal splint to protect your teeth and align your bite. Unlike typical nightguards, we design our splints to help your jaw align in the proper position, providing relief from many symptoms. Some patients even report feeling improvement within a day or two!
We will begin by taking digital impressions of your teeth and any necessary x-rays to determine the correct alignment for your jaw. We will create your splint so that it fits snugly and comfortably. Since it is designed especially for you, it will be easy for you to adjust to wearing it. Once you begin wearing your splint, we will make periodic adjustments to it to ensure a good fit and that your jaw is in comfortable alignment.
Misalignment of your teeth is professionally known as Occlusal Equilibration.
“Occlusal” refers to how your teeth fit together. Sometimes if your teeth are worn or misaligned, or if you have dental restorations that do not quite fit properly, we may need to even out your bite in order for you jaw to feel comfortable. We achieve this by placing necessary restorations to change your biting surface or by making painless hairline adjustments to your teeth.
The process is complex and few dentists have the education and experience necessary to treat TMJD. Dr. Pasicznyk attended additional continuing education courses and has the experience to give you excellent results.
Our entire team is committed to helping you have a healthy, happy, and comfortable smile!
